College of Life Sciences

  

Biology is one of the oldest disciplines at Shanghai Normal University, which originated from Shanghai Teachers Training College (founded in Oct. 1954), incorporated of the department into the College of Life and Environmental Sciences in 1998. The Department of Biology was reorganized as the College of Life Sciences (CLS) in Sept. 2018 to meet the needs of rapid development, expansion, and interdisciplinary collaborations in life sciences.

CLS has a faculty of 141, including 28 professors and 48associate professors. Ratio of who holding Ph.D. degree in 110 of professional teachers is more than 95%.

CLS has 5 Bachelor degree programs. Bachelor of Science: Biological Sciences, Biotechnology; Bachelor of Engineering: Food Safty and Security Analysis; Bachelor of Agriculture: Horticulture (Sino-Dutch); Bachelor of Education: Science Education. The total number of undergraduate students is more than1200.

CLS has 2 Master degree programs in first-level disciplines: Biology, Ecology. 1 Ph.D. program: Environmental Science. The total number of graduate students reaches 480. CLS offers Postdoctoral program in Environmental Science.

CLS processes two campuses named Xuhui and Fengxian. Two botanic gardens covering an area of 6.6 acres used for both research and teaching. One Museum of Insects and Vertebrates, with a collection of over 3,000 species of vertebrates and 300,000 species of insects, it has become a leading and very popular site for science education for youth in Shanghai.
